The Kid

Most of you, or the two of you that read this, (thanks Aubrey & Megan) know I have a 5 year old girl. She is without a shadow of a doubt my daughter, she acts like me, reacts like me, and so much of her personality parallels my own. I love her. The other day she had me take a picture of her so that it could be the background for my iPhone so I thought I would share it with all of you. Have a great day.

People Need Direction

Over the past three months we have under gone a transformation at my church. We brought in a consultant to “get us back on track” for the second time in two years. We all liked the first guy but saw little to no change, infact in many ways we regressed once he left town. This time is different. This time there is tangible change. I asked myself the other day what the difference is between the two who had the necessary answers to make us successful and I came to this conclusion. People need direction. The bible says where there is no vision the people perish. This is no more true than right here, right now. It is fascinating to think what can be accomplished if vision is clear and obtainable. People here want to succeed and have wanted to for years. It was often wondered if our staff didn’t care, or didn’t have the goods to make this church grow, and yes there were some here that were a log for the ride but the vast majority of us call this OUR church. Some may still question but don’t get me started on what I think about them… I have invested twelve years in this work and I want to see God’s will in the lives these people carried out. I want to be a part of it, I want to share the victory stories with them. We needed clear direction. We needed a path to follow. We have that now and the future looks bright. I don’t claim to know the future but when you bring vision to passionate people good things often happen. When there is no vision for the future people often reflect back on the past (see Exodus). We have always wanted to see great things, but everyone must spend time in the dessert to appriciate the promise land.Do we have vision? I think so. I like where it’s going…

Moving Forward

It’s time, and I’m not one to get “inspired” all too often but I have fallen into something that I cannot get away from. My inspiration derives from three sources I have experienced in the past few weeks. The first is the message that Jackson Senyonga spoke while with us on the last day he taught. I had never read this passage prior to this night but Ezekiel 1:25-2:2 really oepned my eyes. Read it, it will yours too. Second was the events of this past week with the Rockies and their quest for the World Series. So far removed from what their goals were only a month ago, they began winning, and 21 wins later they are awaiting the winner of the ALCS on their journey through history. And finally, TD JAKES. I could stop right there. The man is amazing. I am never in awe of any man, or celebrity but this guy is a league all his own. His message inspired me. But his green room talk moved me. Hesaid he is waiting for leaders of my generation to asise frow within and lead their piers. He referenced Joshua, which instantly stirred my spirit.

All three of these share a common interest. The time is now. It’s time to get things moving. No longer sitting around, no longer, it’s time for us to make the move and see things happen!

Carpet

Well it’s a Friday and for the first time in three months I have the ability to stay home and do nothing. So we scheduled to have our carpets cleaned. You need to understand the significance of this for a moment, clean carpets mean a lot to me. Maybe because growing up ours was always cluttered and dirty. Yeah that’s probably where the obsession roots from. Anyways, I’m sitting here as the guys cleans our carperts with his little machine, and for the next 6 months they will look pretty clean on the surface. But we all know it’s only a surface cleaning I am paying for. The work being done does not remove the dirt that is “set in” to the padding lying just below the thin layer of off white fibers.

How often do we treat our personal life in this manner. I know I do. It looks good on the surface but the dirt and grime of my choices still remain under the surface untreated because many times the quick cleaning is sufficient. I use Kiwi Carpet Cleaners cause they come with the one year warranty. Anytime I need them they come back and clean the surface all over again. Over and over again. Weekly if I want them too. Sound like life? So how do we live in a way that is not like a surface level of cleanliness? Is it possible? The Apostle Paul struggled with this same topic 2,000 years ago, and he was in many ways the greatest follower of Christ to walk the earth. I took the time to read Philippians 3 today and I am reminded of what really matters…

Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

I don’t do things right all the time, but this verse serves as a reminder that that is what makes life, life. It’s how we deal with those shortcoming and under the surface dirt that really matters. So today, I press on.

Rockies

I love being a fan in or of a four sport town. If one of your teams (Broncos) is not quite what you expected it’s always nice to know that there is a pretty good chance one of the other three will have some measure of success. Well all i got to say, and Michael you will love this, is go ROCKIES!

Jerry Maguire Moments

Hey all, I just started this blog today because I have been internally wrestling with many a thoughts. Life is so complicated. Life is so much about stuff, and feelings, and I guess my basic question is this… should it be? Should it be complicated? Should it be about stuff? Should it be about feelings? If not what should it be about? What is it that really matters anyway? I started this journey into ministry eleven years ago and to be honest with you I was clueless. I just wanted to hang out with teenagers, and help them love God. I knew nothing about management and administration, nothing about doctrine and theology, all I knew was I loved God and I wanted others to love him too. Fast forward to the now. I have learned a lot. I have seen a lot. I have been married for ten years, pastor for six, a father for five and I have come to the unsettling reality that what I knew than is all that really matters anyway. To know God, and make Him known. All the other stuff along the way will do one of two things; help you accomplish your goals, or help you lose focus of it, and sometimes it’s hard to desciphere between the two.

In the movie Jerry, realizes that after years of building his dreams he has lost sight of them without even knowing. He than franticly returns to his roots of taking care of the indivual as to help them find their dreams, thus rekindling his own. What is pastoral ministry really? To build big building? To take good offerings? To shout through an expensive, state of the art PA system about things we say we beleive? Or is it to help others connect to a God that has the answers to their problems. The hard part is doing it in such a way that makes it relevant to the place where people are at.

Where do we go from here? How do we do what we know is right, and do it in a way that works? How we reach the masses, but do it one indivual at a time? We know the why, but the church can’t figure out the how.
